The German language is Europe’s largest natively spoken language and also used in over 27 nations across the world. It is one of the top foreign languages to learn whether you’re learning just for the sake of it or for career opportunities. Personally, I don’t even think you’d need more motivation to learn german language if you even know a little about it.

But let’s just come to the point alright. You’re here to know why you HAVE to learn the german language. Out of myriad languages to choose from, why should you choose to learn german language?

I’ve crafted this blog to tell you precisely the same. So without further ado, let me share 5 reasons why you should learn German language.

1. Some of the greatest revolutionaries and innovators spoke the German language

It is for a reason that Germany is referred to as “The land of poets and thinkers” (Das Land der Dichter und Denker). German is one of the primary languages spoken by over 33 Nobel awardees, 13 awardees in literature and 30 in physics.

Some of the greatest artists, philosophers, and scientists who changed the world were all german-speaking. The most renowned among them are Albert Einstein, Planck, Heisenberg, Kant, Nietzche, Karl Marx, Mozart, and Beethoven.

What does that mean for you if you learn german language? Well, learning the german language won’t get you a Nobel Prize. But at least it will provide deeper insights on how some of the greatest human minds worked.

2. Some of the most successful business corporations are German

Germany houses some of the most successful businesses across the globe. Some of these companies include the Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedez- Benz, Adidas, Siemens, Lufthansa, SAP, Bosch, DHL among others.

If you’re looking for a successful career in the automobile industry, then you can learn german language to gain deeper insights into the sector’s most successful companies.

(Interesting Fact: Most top luxury automobile brands you’ve heard of- including Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ducati are all collectively owned by the Volkswagen Group. That gives you a glimpse on the scale of control possessed by this german manufacturer on the automobile industry).

Perhaps you could also make a fortune at Berlin, the “Silicon Valley of Europe” if you learn German language. The capital of Germany is a hub for startups and innovators, and knowing the German language while working here could be a huge bonus for career prospects.

3. You can study at a German institution for Free! (Almost)

In fact, a report from Study.EU says that international students are the most interested to study in Germany out of all European countries!

Of course, you need a residence permit in the country if you’re from outside Europe. But what better way to learn german language than learning it at a German institution, along with german natives in the Deutschland itself?

4. If you know English, then learning German language is much easier than you think

reasons to learn german language
The English language has its roots in West Germanic Languages

West Germanic languages have greatly influenced the English language. In fact, English uses a lot of german expressions, including the words Kindergarten, blitzkrieg, blind, hamburger, noodle among many others. But how does knowing English makes it easier to learn German language?

Well, because it’s really easy to relate german vocabulary to English words. This, in turn, makes it easier to memorize german words and learn the language itself. Some of the myriad words which are identical in both English and German include the words blind, experiment, finger, baby, intelligent, among others.

5. You gain access to a new part of the internet

The German top-level domain “.de” is the 5th most popular top-level domain on the Internet

As I’ve already mentioned before, the German language is the most spoken native language in Europe. It is also the 12th most-spoken language in the world by a number of speakers, with over 132 million people using it in their lives.

These 132 million German-speaking people also use millions of german websites on the Internet, which make up for 5.6% of the entire world wide web. Additionally, “.de”, the german country top-level domain is the fifth-most used top-level domain and the second-highest in the list of most popular country top-level domains on the internet.

So if you learn german language, you would be able to explore a whole new world of the internet incomprehensible to a vast majority of the world.

Did these reasons convince you to learn german language?

I really hope these reasons motivated you to learn german language. The German language is absolutely worth learning- whether you’re doing it for better career prospects, or just as a hobby. It’s related to English at many levels, yet it’s completely different from it in ways I couldn’t even tell- literally! Using german allows its users to express themselves in ways that one couldn’t even think of with any other language.

Perhaps that is the reason why german-speaking icons such as Einstein, Mozart, and Neitzsche left such a huge impact in the world. Who knows?

  1. Hey ! I completed my graduation in b.com(h) in 2019, now i want to make a career in german language. So should i proceed or shall i pursue a different course like digital marketing ?

    1. For your answer, you need to look practically and analyze what both Digital Marketing & German language offer to you. If the reason for you wanting a career in German is solely for its scope in terms of monetary value, then I won’t suggest pursuing it. As for Digital Marketing, the sector is exploding in the Indian market due to the proliferation of the Internet, thanks to Jio and other factors. There are a lot of avenues today if you want to pursue a career in Digital Marketing in India (though I have a feeling that the Internet Explosion here has reached its peak).
